International students in Canada can now work 24 hours a week while school is in session. Starting right away, students who change their schools while in Canada must apply for a new study permit. The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, today announced new regulations for the International Student Program are now in force. This includes an amendment to how many hours international students can work off campus, which was proposed earlier in the year. Under this change, eligible students are able to work off-campus for up to 24 hours per week while they are in school. As announced by IRCC: Moving forward, international students will need to apply and be approved for a new study permit before being able to change learning institutions. This change is in line with the important work that IRCC is doing to strengthen the integrity of the International Student Program. More information on this is available here. The designated learning institutions play a vital role in ensuring that the student programs are not misused. Since 2015, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has been working with DLIs to enhance the reporting of student compliance. Now, DLIs that do not submit compliance reports or verify acceptance letters will be sanctioned. In this recent change now under way, a DLI could be stopped from accepting new international students for up to a year if they fail to provide the needed information. These enhancements will help monitor things better while supporting international students and safeguarding their learning experiences in Canada. more details here
